APA’s inaugural MOORE Equity in Mental Health 5K Run/Walk/Roll will be held Saturday, July 10, and I urge you to get involved. This fun, virtual event is a terrific way to bring awareness to and address mental health inequities facing Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) youth. It also honors unwavering mental health equity advocate Bebe Moore Campbell.

Stigma and bias toward mental illness can be major barrier to people accessing needed care. When that stigma and bias exists within the health care system, it can have an especially harmful impact. The Mental Health Commission of Canada has undertaken a multi-year effort to better understand equity and the systemic implicit bias against mental health and substance use, how it impacts health outcomes and quality of life, and what can be done to reshape and improve care for people with mental illness.

For Asian Americans, including myself, a run to the grocery store might mean additional risks under the COVID-19 pandemic like physical and verbal assaults. During stay-at-home orders, there were more than 1,700 anti-Asian incidents reported to the Stop AAPI Hate online tracker, managed by several Asian American interest organizations.
