Heading off to college often brings a great deal of change, and with it, significant stress. A program developed at the University of Washington, the Be REAL (REsilient Attitudes and Living), program may help. Be REAL is designed to promote the well-being of high-school age youth, college students, and staff, and its effectiveness is supported by research.

Two weeks prior to school starting, a group of Houston middle school teachers met at Baylor College of Medicine’s campus, where we, the three authors, led a workshop to equip middle school teachers with new knowledge of mindfulness interventions. Teachers, who also manage their own life stressors, are often the first to respond when students face emotional distress. Together, we discussed how mindfulness is invaluable in supporting the mental well-being and emotional health of students and teachers alike.
When Autism and ADHD Occur Together
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are neurodevelopmental disorders. Both affect brain development. These two conditions frequently occur together. An individual may be diagnosed with both conditions or may have one diagnosis with some characteristics of the other condition. The co-occurrence of ADHD and autism is sometimes known as AuDHD.
Sleepwalking and Other Parasomnias
Parasomnias are a group of sleep disorders involving abnormal, unpleasant motor, verbal or behavioral events that occur during sleep or sleep transitions. (Singh 2018) Parasomnias include sleep-related disorders, such as sleepwalking, nightmares and sleep terrors. Many of these sleep-related experiences may be just mildly annoying, such as talking in your sleep or a child’s occasional nightmare. But in some cases, these conditions can potentially be very disruptive or disturbing, and they can be treated.
