Reproductive Depressions are depressive episodes that are triggered by time of reproductive hormonal change in women, which may have a more homogeneous biological basis. Exciting research has recently led to two new medications for the treatment of Postpartum Depression with unique mechanisms of action as GABA Receptor positive allosteric modulators. Over a decade of research has also led to the development of a blood test for Postpartum Depression that is predictive with 80% accuracy based on epigenetic biomarkers. Both of these advancements are leading to alterations in the treatment approach to managing and potentially preventing postpartum depression.

Learning Objectives

  • Define the terms "reproductive depression" and "epigenetics"
  • Analyze the primary mechanism of action of brexanolone and zuranolone, illustrating their respective roles in treating postpartum depression
  • Evaluate the impact of the new GAPA positive allosteric modulator drugs on the treatment strategy for postpartum depression
  • Discuss how identification of women at elevated risk for postpartum depression in the third trimester alters the treatment approach for postpartum depression
