New Research Highlights the Expanding and Valuable Role Telepsychiatry is Playing in Improving Mental Health Care
Two studies released today in the journal Psychiatric Services add to the growing evidence of telepsychiatry’s contribution to improved mental health care. One study examined the use of telepsychiatry in emergency departments nationwide and a second looked at the use of telepsychiatry to improve screening, diagnosis and treatment of pregnancy-related depression.

Conspiracy theories, which explain events or a set of circumstances as the result of secret plot by usually powerful and malevolent groups, are quite common. Research has provided some understanding about why people are drawn to conspiracy theories and what makes some people more likely to believe than others.
Alcohol Use Disorder: Social Media, Technology, and Treatment
While most can enjoy alcohol occasionally without problems, alcohol use disorder is common and often untreated. An estimated 11% of all adults and 15% of young adults (aged 18-25) had alcohol use disorder in the past year. Several recent studies highlight some challenges related to alcohol content on social media along with some promising approaches to treatment.

On April 23, 2015 APA published a revision to the third item on its Choosing Wisely list to better reflect that there are instances in which dementia-associated symptoms (e.g., aggressive behavior due to paranoid delusions) pose an acute threat to the individual and others, and in these instances antipsychotic medications must be used before formal nonpharmacologic measures can be instituted.
