The goal of the APA SAMHSA-funded Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) is to reduce mental health disparities by enhancing the knowledge and capabilities of culturally competent psychiatry residents who can teach, administer services, conduct research, and provide direct mental and/or substance use disorder services to minority and/or underserved minority patient populations.
The 2018-2019 application cycle closed on January 31, 2019. The 2019-2020 application cycle will commence on November 1, 2019.

- Opportunity for second-year fellows to attend September Components Meeting, including the full-day All Fellows' Orientation

Program Benefits
- Develop leadership skills in the field of psychiatry and advance understanding of the life experiences of racial/ethnic minority communities.
- Receive mentorship from the National Minority Mentor's Network (NMMN) and at multiple levels throughout APA.
- Attend APA Annual Meeting.
- For second-year fellows, gain understanding of APA Governance through service on an APA Council.
- Participate in workshop presentations at APA meetings.
- Attend courses and workshops at APA Meetings and attend training opportunities that develop psychiatry leaders with an interest in improving the quality of mental health care for diverse and underserved populations.
- Have the opportunity to sit on the APA Board of Trustees as a non-voting member (one SAMHSA, SAMSHA Substance Abuse or Diversity Leadership fellow allowed).
- Receive access to a lifetime network of a professional association with psychiatrists interested in minority mental health and services.
- Establish relationships and peer-mentorship with a diverse group of resident fellows with similar career interests and goals.
- Gain access to resources and supporting activities that enhance culturally relevant aspects of their training program.

One year, optional second year with reapplication
Program Term
Oct. 1, 2019 – Sept. 30, 2020, renewable second year
Eligibility at the Time of Matriculation
- Must be at least a PGY-1 and remain in training the entire duration fellowship
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident (permanent residents must submit, by July, a notarized statement indicating possession of the alien registration receipt card, I-151 or I-551)
- Federal employees and individuals on temporary or student visas are ineligible
- African-American, Alaskan Native, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander residents are especially encouraged to apply.
Participation in more than one APA fellowship simultaneously is not permitted
Application Requirements
- Completed online application form
- Curriculum vitae
- One-page personal statement explaining how the fellowship will impact the applicant's career
- Three letters of recommendation from psychiatrists, including one letter from Training Director addressing trainee's contribution to minority and underserved populations
- Proposed budget plan (budget up to $25,000)
- Narrative budget justification describing how funds will be used and how they will support the mission of the Fellowship.

Program Responsibilities
Recipients must commit throughout the duration of the fellowship to:
- Properly use funding in accordance with the guidelines administered by SAMHSA*.
- Attend the APA Annual Meeting and all fellowship-related activities.
- Contribute to the work of an APA Council (in-person meetings, conference calls, email discussions and Council work groups), during optional second year.
- Participate in the All Fellows' Orientation during the APA September Components Meeting.
- Join a minimum of 75% of regular fellowship teleconferences.
- Schedule mid-year and year-end evaluations with Fellowship Program Director and Manager.
- Prepare a mid-year and year-end report outlining use of funds and fellowship experiences.
- Contribute items for the All Fellows' e-newsletter and/or submit a post to the APA blog.
- Commit to the duration of the fellowship program.
Disclaimer
The APA/SAMHSA Fellows (subject to the availability of funds) receive a stipend and serve for one year with an opportunity to apply for an additional year as long as Fellows are in training.
Fellowship awards are subject to future funding from Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
