Welcome to San Francisco: A Message from the Northern California Psychiatric Society
Welcome
On behalf of the Northern California Psychiatric Society, it is with great enthusiasm that I welcome you to San Francisco for the American Psychiatric Association's Annual Meeting. This year, we are thrilled that this meeting will be held in a city renowned for its vibrant culture, innovative spirit, and commitment to mental health advocacy.
NCPS is a district branch of more than 1,300 members representing psychiatrists living and working in 18 counties in Northern California, extending from the western coastline from the North border to San Luis Obispo County.
As one of the five California district branches, NCPS remains dedicated to patient advocacy by improving care and rehabilitation of individuals with mental illness, advancing psychiatric best practices and working on access to care and healthcare delivery, as well as providing support to psychiatrists.
Explore San Francisco
San Francisco is one of the major cities of the area; it is a hub for cutting-edge medical research and is also a city rich in history and diversity. I encourage you to take some time to explore our iconic landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf, and Alcatraz Island. Additionally, the city boasts different ways to connect with nature like Twin Peaks, Golden Gate Park or drive up north to explore the stunning coastline around Point Reyes and hike around Muir Woods where you can check out towering redwoods.
For sports fans, don’t miss a game at Oracle Park. Relax after a long day of learning and networking by exploring the diverse and fabulous cuisines in Chinatown, North Beach, Mission District, and the Marina, to name a few. The city is also peppered with many theaters, music venues and museums; in fact, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) – just a couple of blocks from the conference venue. We hope you will find inspiration in the energy and beauty of the surroundings.
A City of Beauty and Complexity
Like any major city, San Francisco also continues to tirelessly to help unhoused individuals–especially those suffering from major mental health and substance use disorders. For example, street response teams with trained clinicians are directed to mental health crises, rather than only law enforcement. The American Psychiatric Association will be debuting resources for psychiatrists to help any individuals in distress they might encounter.
Learning, Connection, and Shared Purpose
As mental health professionals, we gather each year to share knowledge, discuss advances in our field, and collaborate on the best practices to enhance patient care. This year’s meeting promises to offer an extraordinary lineup of keynote speakers, insightful workshops, and networking opportunities. You will have the chance to engage with the latest research, explore new treatment modalities, and connect with fellow psychiatrists from across the nation and beyond.
As you settle into our city, please feel free to reach out with any questions or for recommendations on local attractions and dining options. We are here to ensure you have a wonderful experience both at the conference and beyond.
