Biography

David M. Roane, M.D., has served as Chair of Psychiatry at Northwell Lenox Hill Hospital since 2017. Prior to arriving at Lenox Hill, Dr. Roane was a full-time faculty of Mount Sinai Beth Israel. His roles at Beth Israel included: Chief of the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry, Director of the Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship Program, Director of Residency Training, and Associate Chairman for Education. Dr. Roane is currently Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology at the Donna and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

After attending medical school at SUNY at Stony Brook, Dr. Roane completed his Psychiatry Residency at NYU Medical Center, serving as Chief Resident in his final year. He completed a fellowship in Neurobehavior at Beth Israel and is Board Certified in Geriatric Psychiatry. Dr. Roane has published and presented at national and international meetings on the following topics: geriatric depression, neuropsychiatry, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, psychiatric education, physician depression, psychosexual medicine, and hoarding disorder in the elderly.

Dr. Roane has received numerous government and foundation grants to develop community-based programs to improve access to mental health services for older adults. He has created novel programs combining in-person home visits and telehealth to reach individuals who otherwise would never receive care. In 2024 he was awarded two New York State grants, totaling over $500,000 to extend his work to Harlem.

Dr. Roane has been a leader in addressing the mental health struggles of physicians. He established comprehensive mental health programs for residents at both Beth Israel and Lenox Hill. He co-chaired the first committee to address resident well-being for the Mount Sinai Health Care System and has joined committees focused on physician well-being at Northwell and on the state level.

He has served on the National Assembly of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and is a past President of the New York County Psychiatric Society. He is currently a member of APA’s Council on Geriatric Psychiatry. He is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the APA and has been chosen for membership in the American College of Psychiatrists.

At Lenox Hill Hospital, Dr. Roane has served as the Secretary of the Medical Board. In 2024, under his direction, the ACGME approved the first-ever Psychiatry Residency for Lenox Hill. Throughout his career, Dr. Roane has maintained an active clinical practice in geriatric and general adult psychiatry.
