APA Publishing Names Kathryn Ridout, M.D., New Editor of Psychiatric Research and Clinical Practice

  • June 25, 2026

Washington, D.C., — American Psychiatric Association Publishing has selected Kathryn Ridout, M.D., Ph.D., to serve as editor of Psychiatric Research and Clinical Practice, its quarterly journal.

Dr. Ridout is a research scientist with the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research and a senior psychiatrist with The Permanente Medical Group, where she has led initiatives to integrate psychiatry with primary care: improving depression care management, embedding trauma-informed approaches across care settings, and scaling evidence-based practices. She has served as principal investigator for studies focused on optimizing depression care through precision medicine, tailoring interventions for perinatal populations, scaling evidence-based treatments for depressive and anxiety disorders, and addressing bias in quality measures. Her publishing track record spans 20 years of review and editorial oversight, along with more than 75 peer-reviewed publications.

“We are delighted that Dr. Ridout will be stewarding the next evolutionary stage of Psychiatric Research and Clinical Practice,” said Simone Taylor, Ph.D., vice president of publishing at APA. “We are confident that Dr. Ridout will build upon the success of the journal’s founding editor, Kimberly Yonkers, M.D., and we look forward to working closely with Dr. Ridout to strengthen the journal’s role as the premier platform for translating psychiatric research into actionable insights that improve patient care, inform policy, and advance equity in mental health.”

Psychiatric Research and Clinical Practice is a peer-reviewed journal from the American Psychiatric Association that offers a high-profile publishing destination for submissions on all aspects of mental and behavioral health, informing the field from bench to bedside. Published in accordance with open-access principles, the journal makes all of its content immediately available for free.

“The mission of Psychiatric Research and Clinical Practice, to translate scientific findings into actionable insights for clinicians, resonates deeply with my professional vision,” said Ridout. “By prioritizing clinical utility, equity, and innovation, the journal can lead the field in shaping psychiatric care for the future.”

Dr. Ridout takes the reins from Laura Dunn, M.D., who had been serving as interim editor during the search for a permanent editor. Dunn will continue to serve the journal as a member of its Editorial Board.
