APA Journals Ranked Highly on Latest Scientific Literature “Impact Factor”

  • June 30, 2023

Washington, D.C., — The American Psychiatric Association (APA)’s journals were well-represented in the latest edition of the Journal Citation Reports (Clarivate Analytics © 2023), in which journals are assigned “Impact Factors.” Impact Factor is a bibliometric calculation that describes the level of influence a journal’s published output has on the scientific literature by measuring how many times the work it publishes is cited by others.

The American Journal of Psychiatry achieved an Impact Factor of 17.7. The score can be interpreted as an average, where every article that AJP published in the reporting period (i.e., during the years 2020 and 2021) was cited by more than 17 articles in 2022. This Impact Factor ranks AJP among the highest not just in the category of psychiatry: among all the 21,522 journals indexed and measured in STEM publishing, AJP’s 17.7 places it in the top 300, ahead of 97% of journals in the world.

The latest Impact Factor for Psychiatric Services, which covers the delivery of mental health services, is 3.8. Of the journals included in the Health Policy & Services category, Psychiatric Services is the highest-ranked mental health journal. Psychiatric Services is also the #1 mental health journal in the category of Public, Environmental & Occupational Health.

The Impact Factor for APA’s Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences rose this year to 2.9, its highest since 1999.

The American Journal of Psychotherapy, which APA Publishing recently acquired, saw its Impact Factor restored after a 20-year absence. The journal’s Impact Factor of 2.5 places it in the top 10 journals in the Clinical Psychology category of the Emerging Sources Citation Index.
