Building Support for Young Women’s Mental Well-Being

In 2023, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released findings from a national survey that revealed a significant rise in mental health challenges among adolescent girls. In 2021, 57% of high school girls reported experiencing persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness; a notable increase from 36% in 2011. This rate was nearly twice that of their male peers. Additionally, 30% of girls said they had seriously considered suicide, and 13% had attempted suicide at least once in 2021. This roundtable conversation will explore the unique and shared mental health challenges experienced by young women across populations. The panelists will examine contributing factors and discuss actionable strategies to support early intervention and ways frontline healthcare providers can strengthen referral pathways and connect young women to appropriate mental health services.

Combating the Nationwide LGBTQI+ Youth Mental Health Crisis

On June 23, 2023, the Biden-Harris administration announced action steps to protect LGBTQI+ communities. We are facing a nationwide mental health crisis, and almost half of LGBTQI+ youth report that they seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year. The Trevor Project, a leading suicide prevention and crisis intervention nonprofit organization for LGBTQ+ young people, conducted a national survey in 2024 highlights the experiences of over 18,000 LGBTQ+ young people aged 13 to 24 across the United States. For those youth who identify as LGBTQI+ and a person of color, the survey noted that:
- Nearly all LGBTQ+ young people of color reported higher rates of attempting suicide than their white peers in the past year.
- Across race/ethnicity, Native/Indigenous youth who are Two-Spirit/LGBTQ+ consistently report the highest suicide risk.
- Black transgender and nonbinary young people report disproportionate rates of suicide risk — with 58% seriously considering suicide and 1 in 4 (25%) attempting suicide in the past year.
This course will discuss the growing crisis of suicide among LGBTQI+ youth of color, and how education, outreach, and advocacy can help address this public health crisis.
The Mental Health Impact of Severe Maternal Morbidity and Mortality on Families

The current maternal health crisis in the United States disproportionately impacts non-Hispanic Black and Indigenous birthing people, who are three to four times more likely to experience birth-related deaths and Severe Maternal Morbidity (SMM). This roundtable conversation will focus on the impact of maternal deaths on surviving family members and the unmet mental health needs of those who experience SMM. The panelists will explore strategies to address maternal mental health care access disparities and discuss ways front-line reproductive health providers can facilitate mental health services referrals to better support families.
Mental Health Roundtable with APA MOORE Equity in Mental Health Initiative Grand Marshal Jay Barnett

This event will place a spotlight on the critical topic of teen suicide among Black youth, emphasize the importance of supporting mental wellness in communities of color, and highlight how to better utilize resources to support young people of color. We are excited to welcome Jay Barnett, our APA Moore Equity in Mental Health Initiative Grand Marshal - renowned for his inspiring talks on personal growth and resilience. With his captivating storytelling and expertise, Mr. Barnett will shed light on effective strategies to address the mental health challenges faced by young people of color. Dr. Regina S. James who serves as the American Psychiatric Association’s Chief of the Division of Diversity and Health Equity and Deputy Medical Director will serve as a discussant with Mr. Barnett. The conversation will be moderated by Candice Adkins-Wilson who serves as the News Producer of “The Daily Drum” at Howard University’s WHUR-FM Radio.
