Externship in Addiction Psychiatry

Funded by SAMHSA

This program is intended to identify racial/ethnic minority medical students who have an interest in psychiatric services related to substance use disorders, prevention and early intervention. Medical students will spend a month during their summer break working with a psychiatrist mentor at a designated site where they will get a hands-on look at how psychiatrists treat patients with substance use disorders and participate in an interactive didactic experiential learning program.

The goals of the externship are to cultivate medical student interest in serving racial/ethnic minorities and underserved populations and clinician recruitment into psychiatry. Mentors and sites are selected where there is an approved substance abuse training program and a significant number of substance use disorder patients from minority and underserved populations. Applicants are encouraged to invite other possible mentors to participate in the program.

The APAF Medical Student Externship in Addiction Psychiatry program is supported by funds from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), under the Minority Fellowship Program.

The 2021 application cycle has ended. The 2022 application cycle will open on November 1, 2021.
