Surgeon General’s Campaign to End the Opioid Epidemic

Take the pledge, find resources to help

We, as clinicians, are uniquely positioned to turn the tide on the opioid epidemic."

Surgeon General Vivek Murthy

Turn the Tide Rx is a nationwide campaign launched by U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy to end the opioid epidemic, an urgent crisis facing America.

In a letter sent to physicians across the country, Surgeon General Murthy has called on physicians to take a pledge to:

  1. Educate themselves to treat pain safely and effectively.
  2. Screen patients for opioid use disorder and provide or connect them with evidence-based treatment.
  3. Shape how the rest of the country sees addiction by talking about and treating it as a chronic illness, not a moral failing.

By The Numbers

Over 249,000,000 prescriptions for opioids were written in 2013 — enough for every adult in America to have a bottle of pills.

300% increase in opioid prescription sales since 1999 — without overall change in reported pain.

As many as 1 in 4 receiving long-term opioid therapy (in primary care settings) struggles with opioid addiction.
