Educational Objectives

  • Identify the causes of excess mortality in the SMI population and discuss lifestyle modifications that are useful
  • Describe the current state of the art in treating diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemias, smoking cessation and obesity
  • Demonstrate skills in understanding the use of treatment algorithms for prevalent chronic illnesses in the SMI population
  • Explore the use of a primary care consultant to assist in treatment of patients if prescribing desired
  • Discuss the rationale and a proposed framework for psychiatrist management of chronic physical conditions with emphasis on liability and scope of practice concerns.
