NEW APA Election Guidelines for 2022

Candidates must follow the new campaign rules that are meant to ensure an inclusive process. All campaigning may only be done through APA-managed activities, and other activities as determined by the APA Election Committee. Use the button below to jump to view:

The deadline for petition candidates is November 10, 2021.

2022 Election Guidelines Details

To reiterate: Candidates must follow the new campaign rules that are meant to ensure an inclusive process. All campaigning may only be done through APA-managed activities, and other activities as determined by the APA Election Committee.

Highlights of Approved APA-Managed Activities:

  • Live Meet-the-Candidate Virtual Town Halls
    • 60- to 90-minute live sessions held during Town Hall Week, December 13-16 at 8:00 p.m. ET
      • December 13: President-Elect, Treasurer & Trustee-at-Large
      • December 14: Area 3 Trustee
      • December 15: Area 6 Trustee
      • December 16: Resident-Fellow Member Trustee-Elect (RFMTE)
    • Learn More + Register for Town Halls
  • Special Edition APA Election Newsletter of candidates’ platforms emailed to all voting members on or around December 1.
  • Psychiatric News December Election Issue with candidate information and election details.
  • APA Election Website expanded to serve as a centralized location for all election and candidate-related information. Return to the website for updates throughout the election cycle. (Links to the special election newsletter, Psychiatric News issue, candidate ballot booklet, and Town Hall videos will be added when available.)

Some Activites that are Not Permissible:

  • Campaigning by or on behalf of candidates—including campaign emails, phone calls, and letters to members—is not permitted.
  • Use of any and ALL APA listservs, including the Member-to-Member listserv, for campaigning is not permitted.
  • Endorsement by organizations is not permitted. Candidates may submit a list of individual endorsements to be included as part of their information posted on the APA candidate webpage. Candidates are no longer permitted to have personal campaigning websites.

Election Guidelines, developed by the Elections Committee and approved by the Board of Trustees are intended to provide a level playing field for candidates. APA-managed campaign activities will begin when the slate of candidates is announced.
