Achievements in Psychiatric Services & Public Outreach

Administrative Psychiatry Award

Nomination Deadline: July 1

Honors as a role model an APA member and administrator of a major mental health program that has expanded the knowledge of management of mental health service delivery systems.

Distinguished Service Award

Nomination Deadline: October 31

The Distinguished Service Award honors an APA Distinguished Fellow, Fellow, General Member, nonmember, or organization who has contributed exceptional meritorious service to the field of psychiatry.

Jacob Javits Award for Public Service

Nomination Deadline: August 31

The Javits Award for Public Service acknowledges a public servant who has made a significant contribution to the mental health community, such as ensuring access to quality services for individuals with mental illness. It also showcases the work of honorees on behalf of consumers, the field of mental health, and the medical profession. This is the highest award APA confers on a public servant.

Lima (Bruno) Award in Disaster Psychiatry

Nomination Deadline: September 8

Recognizes district branch members for outstanding contributions to the care and understanding of the victims of disasters.

Patient Advocacy, Award for

Nomination Deadline: September 30

Recognizes a public figure who has promoted the improvement of services for people with mental disorders and substance abuse and who has fought stigma by speaking out about experiences with mental illness and psychiatric treatment.

Psychiatric Services Achievement Awards

Nomination Deadline: July 31

Recognizes innovative programs that deliver services to people with mental illness or disabilities, have overcome obstacles, and can serve as models for other programs.

Menolascino (Frank J.) Award

Nomination Deadline: July 1

Recognizes an APA member who has made significant contributions to psychiatric services for persons with intellectual developmental disorders/developmental disabilities.

McGavin (Agness Purcell) Award for Prevention

Honors an outstanding contributor in the field of psychiatry and religion.

Soo (Kun-Po) Award

Recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions toward understanding the impact and importance of Asian cultural heritage in areas relevant to psychiatry.

Spurlock (Jeanne) Minority Fellowship Achievement Award

Acknowledges achievements of former fellows of the Minority Fellowships Program who have made (or are making) significant contributions to the profession and/or the minority community.

Symonds (Alexandra) Award

Award for Research in Psychiatry

Nomination Deadline: September 30

First awarded in 1949 as the Hofheimer Prize, the Award for Research in Psychiatry recognizes a single distinguished contribution, a body of work, or a lifetime contribution that has had a major impact on the field and/or altered the practice of psychiatry. The award covers the full spectrum of psychiatric research.

Alexander Gralnick, M.D. Award for Research in Schizophrenia

Nomination Deadline: September 30

Alexander Gralnick, M.D. Award acknowledges research achievements in the treatment of schizophrenia, emphasizing early diagnosis and treatment and psychosocial aspects of the disease process.

Benjamin Rush Award

Nomination Deadline: August 1

The Benjamin Rush Award, established in 1967, recognizes an individual renowned for his or her contributions to the literature on the history of psychiatry.

Health Services Research Award
