A Message from the Candidate

Biography

Gabrielle Shapiro, M.D., is a General, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist who has dedicated her 30+-year career to the care and advocacy for underserved children, adolescents, and their families. She is committed to understanding and responding to both the biological and social determinants of mental health, with a focus on eliminating disparities in mental health services for underserved communities, including communities of color, Native Americans, LGBTQ+, immigrants, and others.

Dr. Shapiro is a Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. Dr. Shapiro has also served on the faculty at UCSD, NYU and Bellevue Hospital. She is a bilingual (Spanish) psychiatrist who has served her entire career in the public sector. She currently practices in Harlem and the Bronx, in settlement houses, collaborative care settings, and provides care to immigrants in New York and California.

Dr. Shapiro has held leadership roles, both locally and nationally as a Board Member of the NY County Medical Society, NY County Medical Society Executive Council Board of Trustees, NY County Psychiatric Society, NY Council on Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, American Association of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Political Action Committee, and the Sweet Institute. She is former President of The California Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the San Diego Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

A Distinguished Life Fellow of APA, and Distinguished Fellow of AACAP, she is currently serving as the Secretary of the APA Foundation Board, member of the APA PAC Board, Child Council, Hispanic Caucus, Woman’s Caucus Representative to the Assembly, MUR Committee, and involved in APA en Español.

While Dr. Shapiro was Chair, the APA Council on Children, Adolescents, and Their Families produced toolkits and policy statements addressing immigration and child separation, LGBTQ+ issues, cyberbullying, dangers of vaping, increasing Black youth suicide rates, police interactions with children, college mental health, social determinants of mental health, identification of disparities in communities of color, and the growth and expansion of “Notice, Talk, Act” in schools. Dr. Shapiro is a dedicated educator and mentor who has inspired many early career psychiatrists and IMGs to become involved in advocacy, political action, the American Psychiatric Association, and organized medicine. She is the proud mother of Angelica, Jacob and Sonny, her therapy pet.
