Brief Description

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) is seeking applicants for the position of Editor of its official journal, The American Journal of Psychiatry. The current Editor concludes his final term on December 31, 2018.

The American Journal of Psychiatry is the most widely read psychiatric journal in the world. It is committed to keeping the field of psychiatry vibrant and relevant by publishing the latest advances in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. The findings published in the Journal explore the full spectrum of issues related to diagnosis, treatment, neuroscience, and patient populations.

Responsibilities

  • maintaining an overall plan/model concerning format and overall editorial direction of content published by the Journal;
  • nominating members of the Editorial Board and working with them in preparing and implementing policy, content directions and procedures;
  • soliciting contributions from highly respected voices of authority in subject areas of interest to the field;
  • overseeing and ensuring the rigorous and equitable peer review of manuscripts—selecting reviewers, monitoring modifications of revised and resubmitted manuscripts, and making disposition decisions—in a process that is facilitated by an online manuscript tracking system and editorial staff;
  • organizing the content of each issue;
  • planning and implementing new features as appropriate;
  • keeping abreast of ongoing changes and advances in scientific and medical journal publishing, such as quality assurance and accountability and issues of scientific integrity; and
  • providing an annual report to the APA Board of Trustees.

The position of Editor is a part-time position (20 – 30%). Most work is done via the Internet and telephone. There is a negotiable honorarium, but no employee benefits are provided.

Requirements

Applicants must be APA members with significant publishing and editorial experience.
