SUNSHINE ACT NOTICE: This fellowship is partly supported by a pharmaceutical company that is required to publicly report any money provided to the physician, whether as stipend, meals, travel or otherwise in support of this grant, fellowship or award on a public database through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.  Reporting is legally required only if the physician has completed their four year residency in psychiatry.  However, some of the sponsoring companies may report any physician payments regardless of the stage of their career.

The purposes of the American Psychiatric Association Public Psychiatry Fellowship Program are to (1) provide experiences that will contribute to the professional development of residents who will play future leadership roles within the public sector psychiatry, (2) heighten awareness of the public psychiatry activities and career opportunities and (3) to provide a community of peers with shared interest in public psychiatry. Since the program's founding in 1980, the fellowship has been awarded to more than 300 outstanding residents.

Program Benefits

APA Public Psychiatry Fellows are active participants in selected APA components and the Institute on Psychiatric Services (IPS). Based on their expressed interests, fellows are assigned to an APA component and take part in all deliberations, projects, and initiatives. They receive sponsorship to attend component meetings held in September in Arlington, VA.   For many years, APA Public Psychiatry Fellows have had prominent roles in the Institute on Psychiatric Services. The program provides sponsorship to attend two Institutes. Over the course of the fellowship term, fellows work collaboratively to plan a series of workshops that will be presented at their second IPS. Members of the Fellowship Selection Committee serve as mentors in this process.   Each fellowship class selects representatives to the APA's Board of Trustees and the IPS Scientific Program Committee, as well as to the Board of Directors of the American Association of Community Psychiatrists.   Funding to attend the APA Annual Meeting or component meetings held during it is not provided.  

Who is Eligible

  • Only one resident per eligible residency program may be nominated
  • One outstanding resident who has a substantial interest in any area of public sector psychiatry and a significant potential for a leadership role in such work may be nominated by a psychiatric residency training program that is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Submission of a nomination represents an explicit commitment by the residency program to permit the candidate, if selected, time off to attend APA meetings in their entirety during the fellowship term, as well as the candidate's willingness to do so.  
  • Psychiatric residents are currently PGY-2 are eligible to participate in the program. Residents who are currently in their PG-3 year will also be considered if they are in a 5-year psychiatric training program (or entering a subspecialty fellowship training program).  
  • Nominee must be an APA member or in the process of becoming a member. Residents who have received (or are scheduled to receive) other APA fellowships are not eligible.
  • Those residents who currently serve on the APA's Assembly Committee on Area MITs are not eligible for the fellowship.

Selection Criteria:

  • Public Service & Leadership:  Evidence of volunteer work or activities with underserved populations (not including required residency activities) and/or advocacy pursuits.  If the applicant has evidence of leadership and/or collaborative capacity, this should be highlighted in this section.
  • Creative Pursuits: Evidence of creative activity, including but not limited to research, program development, editorials, etc.  Any presentations, publications or grants should be included here.
  • Academic Record:  Undergraduate training, medical school, and graduate training (e.g., MPH), special clinical training, should be included here.  Any awards received by the applicant should be highlighted in this section.
  • Personal Statement: Quality of the personal statement indicating the applicant’s dedication to serving underserved populations with mental illness.
