APA Resident Recognition Awards

The APA Resident Recognition Awards will be presented annually to a psychiatric resident or fellow from each department or institution. Departments are eligible to nominate one APA resident-fellow member who exemplify one or more APA values.

Assembly Resident-Fellow Member Mentor Award

The Assembly Resident-Fellow Member (RFM) Mentor Award is given to APA members who advocate for and mentor future psychiatrists.

Kempf Fund for Development Research in Psychobiological Psychiatry

The award provides a grant for the research development career of a young investigator based on excellence in research in the field of schizophrenia.

Resident Research Award

This award is for to five psychiatry residents who submit the best, original, unpublished scientific paper in psychiatry.

American Psychiatric Leadership Fellowship

The two-year fellowship offers psychiatric residents, with exceptional leadership potential, many different experiences that prepare them for leadership roles. Only the Chair of the Department or the Director of the Training Program can nominate.

APA Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship

Designed to promote interest among general psychiatry residents in pursuing careers in child and adolescent psychiatry. Fellows will learn about new clinical research, successful treatments for children and adolescents with mental disorders, and many other issues associated with child and adolescent mental health.

APA Minority Fellowships

These fellowships endeavors to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in mental health and substance abuse care by providing specialized training to psychiatry residents and medical students interested in serving minority communities.

APA Public Psychiatry Fellowship

This 2-year fellowship provides experiences that will contribute to the professional development of residents who will play future leadership roles within the public sector psychiatry and heighten awareness of the public psychiatry activities and career opportunities.

Jeanne Spurlock, M.D. Congressional Fellowship

This fellowship provides all psychiatry residents, fellows and early career psychiatrists an opportunity to work in a congressional office on federal health policy, particularly policy related to child and/or minority issues.

Psychiatric Research Fellowship

This fellowship sponsors two post-graduate psychiatry trainees specifically to focus on research and personal scholarship.

Resident Psychiatric Research Scholars

This one year fellowship provides mentoring and career enrichment opportunities and travel support to the APA Annual Meeting.

MindGames Residency Competition

APA’s national residency team competition. This competition is intended to be a fun, educational activity that challenges the residents on patient care and medical knowledge.

Resident Poster Competition at 2015 APA Annual Meeting

Best poster from each of the 5 categories: (1) Community Service, (2) Patient Oriented & Epidemiology, (3) Curriculum Development and Education, (4) Psychosocial and Biomedical Research and (5) Clinical Case Studies.


Chief Resident Leadership Conference 

A full day of leadership sessions to help incoming chief residents enhance their self-awareness and learn skills to both be a clinician and leader.

  • Sessions are held at APA Annual Meeting

2015 Research Colloquium for Junior Investigators

The colloquium provides guidance, mentorship and encouragement to young investigators in the early phases of their training. Held during the APA Annual Meeting.
