Buprenorphine Treatment in Rural Communities

Art Van Zee, M.D.
Stone Mountain Health Services
St. Charles Clinic
St. Charles, VA

In this presentation, Dr. Van Zee shares his experience with a buprenorphine treatment program in an Appalachian coal mining town.  The specifics of the treatment program, demographics of the involved patient population, particular difficulties of buprenorphine treatment in his rural area, as well as successes and failures are discussed.

The presentation highlights some problems complicating buprenorphine treatment such as the need for increasing expansion of treatment capacity in the face of increasing commercialization of treatment, the increasing diversion of buprenorphine to the streets, and the challenges that arise nationally for the medical community.
