Melvin Sabshin Library & Archives (MSLA)

Named in honor of Melvin Sabshin, M.D., APA Medical Director (1974-1997), the primary mission of the MSLA is to collect, preserve and organize the official records of the Association. It also functions as a medical specialty library with state-of-the-art resources to meet the reference, research and document delivery needs of APA members and staff.

The Archives

The Archives contains the records of the Association, including governance documents and files for APA divisions, departments and selected projects and activities. Also available are the papers of a small number of prominent leaders in the field as well as an oral history collection.  MORE ...

The Benjamin Rush Award & Lecture

Established in 1967, the lecture, presented at the Annual Meeting or the Institute on Psychiatric Services, focuses on a broad theme related to the history of psychiatry. It is given to a person who has achieved renown for his/her contribution to the history of psychiatry from that field or other fields such as medical history, anthropology, sociology, etc. The selection is made by the APA President and Annual Meeting Scientific Program Committee (Council on Medical Education and Lifelong Learning). Funding: Roche Laboratories through a grant in 1985. Award Recipients.

The Garfield and Helen W. Tourney Rare Books Collection

The TOURNEY COLLECTION contains early works in medicine and the portrayal of mental health. The core collection was donated to the APA by the Tourney family with additional major donations from Marion E. Kenworthy, M.D., and Adolf Meyer, M.D. (Meyer's personal library is integrated into the MSLA main book collection).

The Kenworthy Media Center

The Kenworthy Media Center was established in memory of Marion E. Kenworthy, M.D., a pioneer in psychiatry and the first woman vice president of the Association. It holds the Library's audiovisual resources, including the VIDEO COLLECTION (most of which constituted the Institute on Psychiatric Serivces Video Rental Library) and ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION.
