Global Community of Psychiatrists

APA has 36,000 members consisting of psychiatrists world-renowned in their field, a cadre of international medical graduates, and practicing psychiatrists in over 100 countries. APA is dedicated to promoting the highest-quality care for patients around the world by providing continuing education and the latest research. As a member society of the World Psychiatric Association, APA works closely with other international psychiatric organizations on issues affecting patients and psychiatrists around the world.

International Relief

Global Mental Health Advocacy

  • Global Mental Health Action Plan: APA is engaged in executing the objectives the World Health Organization’s Global Mental Health Action Plan (2013–2020) with special focus on strengthening effective leadership and governance for mental health through key relationships
  • Special Consultative Status: APA maintains special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council to advocate for the inclusion of mental health in international policy.
  • Human Rights: APA supports the work of Physicians for Human Rights and corresponds with Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, World Psychiatric Association, and the U.S. government to determine appropriate interventions regarding human rights violations within the scope of psychiatry.
  • International Education: APA participates in the World Health Organization research program HINARI, which allows free to low-cost electronic access to publications, such as APA journals and books, for institutions in developing countries.

International Fellowships & Opportunities

  • Learning Abroad: APA tracks fellowships with other national and international psychiatric organizations to connect psychiatrists with opportunities to gain international experience.
  • Annual Meeting: International psychiatrists in training or early in their career are encouraged to submit abstracts for presentation at the APA Annual Meeting, including research for presentation during the International Posters sessions.
