APA Seeks to Help CMS Curtail Antipsychotic Over-Prescribing
Tue May 22,
(Washington, D.C.) - The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently solicited regulatory comments related to what steps physicians can take to reduce the over-prescription of antipsychotic medication in long-term care facilities. As part of its Final Rule on Changes to the Medicare Advantage and the Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit Programs for Contract Year 2013, CMS asked what steps should be taken to strengthen attending physician prescriber and other physician prescribers' medication management and prescribing practices to ensure the best quality of care for nursing home residents. APA convened a group of members who have experience prescribing in long-term care facilities to inform the APA's comments.
