Timeline
The next version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, known as DSM-5, is in development. A task force that includes some of the best researchers and clinicians in their fields has been assembled and started work.
Below is the current timeline of DSM-5 development activities:
1999-2007: Development of DSM-5 Pre-Planning white papers, including "A Research Agenda for the DSM-V” (2002, American Psychiatric Association) and “Age and Gender Considerations in Psychiatric Diagnosis: A Research Agenda for the DSM-V” (published in August, 2007) and a white paper on cultural and spiritual issues that can affect diagnosis. “Phase 1: A Research Agenda for DSM-5: White Paper Monographs”
2004-2007: "The Future of Psychiatric Diagnosis: Refining the Research Agenda” APA/NIH/WHO global research planning conferences. "Phase 2: Refining the Research Agenda for DSM-5: NIH Conference Series”
April 2006: Drs. David Kupfer and Darrel Regier are appointed as chair and vice-chair, respectively, of the DSM-5 Task Force. Other key appointments included Dr. William Narrow, Research Director, and Dr. Maritza Rubio-Stipec, Statistical and Methods Director. DSM-5 in the News
July 2007: DSM-5 Work Group Chairs are appointed, DSM-V Work Group members to be nominated.
2007-2011: Development and approval of revised DSM criteria and text. "Current Activities: Reports of the DSM-5 Task Force"
May 2008: DSM-5 Work Group members announced. APA Names DSM-5 Work Group Members
May 2013: Anticipated publication of DSM-5.
